There are shootings everyday, some big some small but you never used to hear about them because of their relative non-importance. Now the media is covering them feverishly. Ratcheting up the fear.

SPORTSCRACK: FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS RACIST

September 3rd, 2010

Floyd Mayweather Jr talking major shit about Manny Pacquiao: “As soon as we come off vacation, we’re going to cook that little yellow chump. We ain’t worried about that. So they ain’t gotta worry about me fighting the midget. Once I kick the midget ass, I don’t want you all to jump on my d—. So you all better get on the bandwagon now. … Once I stomp the midget, I’ll make that mother f—– make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice.”

Um, wow. I don’t even know what to say. Could you imagine if a white person said this? Everybody would be crucifying Mayweather if he wasn’t black. You know what? FUCK MAYWEATHER. I hope Pacquiao destroys that arrogant racist asshole. Mayweather needs to be put in his place.

The back of the bus of course.

Sorry I couldn’t resist.

Kings of the mountain

September 3rd, 2010

About 15 years ago, mountain biker Richie Schley made a prediction so bold that his industry laughed.

He told BIKE magazine that in the future, people would ride bike parks like skiers and snowboarders ride hills – a statement so far-fetched that the bible of mountain biking nominated it among its most ridiculous quotes of the year.

Today, however, Schley is visionary.

“It was a concept I had and always wanted to see happen,” the 41-year-old Whistler resident said. “It makes me feel like I did contribute something.”

Schley, Wade Simmons, 36, and Brett Tippie, 41, the so-called “Fro Riders,” will be inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in Crested Butte, Colo., this September. The pioneering Canadian trio is responsible for “freeriding,” extreme disciplines of mountain biking, some featuring nervy athletes performing big-air tricks down a mountain side.

If skateboarding has its “Dogtown,” the area of Santa Monica where California teens revolutionized the sport, than its freeriding equivalent is the sand shoots and gravel pits in Kamloops, where the Fro Riders began trailblazing in the early-1990s. Around the same time, adrenaline junkies in North Vancouver were barrelling down hiking trails, carving new lines through the woods and jumping off rock faces on the North Shore Mountains.

“We’d be driving around looking for trails,” said Simmons, who was involved in both scenes. “It was a way to get your thrills, and see where you could ride your bike. But we didn’t foresee it getting this big.”

This week, the seventh annual Crankworx festival in Whistler has attracted the top international freeride competitors, as well as recreational riders and spectators. More than 20,000 are expected to huddle at the bottom of the mountain Saturday for the slopestyle competition, the signature event of the nine-day festival.

This made-in-B.C. sport is now part of provincial culture, yet has gone global in reach. Whistler has become the epicentre after opening its chair lifts to freeriders more than a decade ago, and Whistler-Blackcomb’s vice-president of business development Rob McSkimming has been named its most influential person.

“B.C. is a mountain biker’s paradise,” Tippie said. “It’s called mountain biking for a reason. We have wicked mountains, and we’re mountain people.”

In 1999, Schley and others told Whistler-Blackcomb that the Whistler Mountain Bike Park was boring and needed to be overhauled with jumps and bumps where users could get bigger thrills, and flash their aerial artistry. Meanwhile, trail designer Dave Kelly was lobbying for excavation equipment to carve into the terrain, and create never-before-seen runs that would challenge the best and bravest.

A year later, Kelly completed “B-Line,” a revolutionary descent that can be compared to the curved stick in hockey, or the forward pass in football. By 2003, he finished the bigger, badder “A-Line,” now the most popular mountain bike trail in the world.

“The minute we finished B-Line, we knew what we needed to build,” Kelly said. “On it own, it wasn’t going to attract the masses, so we came up with A-Line.”

The Fro Riders had BMX backgrounds; and were professional snowboarders and skiers. They were also adept at photography and video, so when they began chronicling their new-found hobby, the industry took notice.

“[Cycling] was a very race-oriented sport, but at the same time, you had snowboarding that was all about style,” Schley said. “We were all skiers and snowboarders, and in the summer, we were junkies. It was about trying to fulfill that addiction.”

Soon thereafter, BIKE Magazine wrote that B.C.’s riders did it “wilder and steeper than anyone on the planet.” Producer Greg Stump, known for his ski films, featured the Fro Riders in his 1995 production Pulp Traction, while two years later, Squamish, B.C. filmmaker Christian Begin made Kranked, the first of three films on the sport.

The promotion increased the sport’s reach and sophistication. Athletes now perform 360-degree spins and flips off 20-foot drops, and have been called “storm troopers” for their head-to-toe padding.

“Happiness outweighs the injuries,” Simmons said. “We’ve created something that most people can enjoy, and that’s our job: get people onto bikes. When people come up to me and say I got them into riding, it makes my day as much as a great ride.”

Labor Day with Congressman Scott « VIVIAN J. PAIGE | All Politics …

September 3rd, 2010

I started this blog to talk about local politics, specifically Norfolk politics. It is impossible to talk about Norfolk in a vacuum, so you’ll also find some regional, state, and national politics. And sometimes, no politics at all.

The inspiration for this blog comes from one of Virginia’s most respected forefathers:

“I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.”

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Browns Deep Routes – Game News And Notes « SRC's Sports Page …

McCoy Impressive:

After a rocky start, Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy ended up playing his best game of the preseason.

Browns Quarterback Colt McCoy

McCoy fumbled his first snap and also looked terrible the series after that. From that point on, though, he was perfect.

McCoy completed all 13 of his passes for 131 yards.

“Turning the ball over on the first play of the game is frustrating,” McCoy said. “I thought after that we moved the ball pretty efficiently.”

Many believed that McCoy could be cut earlier in the preseason although the Browns have said that McCoy should be on the final roster when it is announced Saturday.

McCoy’s competition for the third quarterback spot, Brett Ratliff, took over in early in the third quarter and did not play well. Ratliff finished the evening 10-for-15 for 93 yards including an interception, but did engineer the game-winning drive on a short field.

Hardesty Update:

Browns Running Back Montario Hardesty

Unfortunately for rookie running back Montario Hardesty, he cannot seem to get healthy. Hardesty made his debut Thursday night and was playing great until a knee injury forced him out of the game.

“It felt good being out on the field again,” Hardesty said. “My knee feels fine but I will know more tomorrow.”

Hardesty was able to walk off the field and into the locker room under his own power. Head coach Eric Mangini said Hardesty’s injury was to his left knee, the opposite of the knee he injured in training camp.

As Hardesty was leaving the locker room after the game, he was on crutches.

Sack Party:

Browns Linebacker Kaluka Maiava

The Browns had their best outing pressuring the quarterback Thursday against the Bears. the team recorded three total sacks including one by last year’s fourth-round pick Kaluka Maiava.

“The pass rush will come,” Mangini said. “I’m more concerned about the scheme instead of individuals”

The Browns sack total from the final preseason game was two more then the team had all of the preseason.

Gladiators in the House:

Cleveland Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn was in attendance for Thursday night’s game. many players who get cut from NFL rosters wind up in either the Arena League or Canadian Football League.

“I’ve got my eye on a few guys,” Thonn said. “They have a lot of talent here so maybe one will fall to us.”

Thonn mentioned he was looking for defensive backs but would not say which ones he hoped might end up with the Gladiators.
